EMDR consultation FAQs

Consultation is when a therapist asks another professional for advice or feedback on difficult cases, treatment strategies or ethical questions. It improves care and gives support in hard situations. It is also used to deepen learning in a specific approach, such as EMDR.

A clinician who is trained and certified in EMDR and has completed the EMDR International Association's requirements to provide consultation to other clinicians.

In short, EMDRIA asks that you: are a licensed mental health professional; have completed an EMDRIA-approved EMDR Basic Training; complete 20 hours of consultation after basic training; conduct at least 50 EMDR sessions with at least 25 people; get two letters of recommendation from peers or colleagues and letters from any EMDR consultants you used; and complete 12 hours of EMDRIA-approved credits after basic training. The 20 hours of required consultation, individually or in a group. EMDRIA limits group hours to 10.

Certification consultation is for therapists who have finished basic training and want a deeper EMDR understanding and practice. We keep grounding ourselves in the foundations of EMDR while working on your cases to grow in conceptualization and clinical application.

EMDR Refresh is a self-paced course from Beyond Healing Institute that supplements the certification process and fulfills the 12 EMDRIA-approved credits. It goes back to the basics of EMDR while deepening the understanding needed to become certified.

Individual consultation is $175 per hour. Group consultation (up to 4 people) is $80 per person per hour.
