Open Road Therapy

Teen Therapy in Casper, WY

The teen years bring a lot at once: changing bodies, friendships, school pressure, phones, and big questions about who you are. Most teens handle it with some ups and downs. Sometimes, though, a parent notices their kid pulling away, struggling to sleep, falling behind, or carrying something they cannot put into words.

At Open Road Therapy in Casper, WY, Brandon Bishop works with adolescents and with parents, and Kala Corban sees older adolescents. Beth Corley works with children and adults affected by adversity. Together we help teens make sense of what they are going through and help families find steadier footing.

Sessions are available in person in Casper or online anywhere in Wyoming.

What teens come to therapy for

Brandon works with adolescents on many of the same things he sees in adults. Teens often come in for:

  • Anxiety, worry or panic
  • Depression, low mood or withdrawing from friends and family
  • Trauma or a frightening experience
  • Grief after a death or another loss
  • Struggles in relationships with friends, partners or family
  • Questions about identity, sexuality or faith

Signs a teen may need support

Some teens can name what is wrong. For others, the signs show up sideways: slipping grades, irritability, trouble sleeping, more time alone in their room, or headaches and stomachaches before school. You don't need to know the cause before reaching out. Sorting that out is part of the work we do together.

How teen therapy works

The first session is about getting to know each other and seeing if it is a good fit. For teens that part matters a lot; therapy goes better when they feel the person across from them is on their side. From there we make a plan together. Most sessions are 60 minutes, weekly or every other week.

We adjust the approach to each teen's needs and strengths. That can include talk therapy, mindfulness and grounding skills for stressful moments, and body-based work that helps a revved-up or shut-down nervous system settle. Brandon, Kala and Beth are all trained in EMDR, which can help with memories that still feel stuck.

Support for parents

Parenting a struggling teen can be lonely and exhausting. Brandon lists parenting among his areas of focus, and his resource list includes books such as The Whole-Brain Child by Dan Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson.

Sessions can be individual, couple or family. When it helps, a parent can join part of a session, or we can meet with parents on their own to talk through what is happening at home and how to respond. Many parents find it helps to have a plan for the hard conversations instead of guessing in the moment.

Working with children and adversity

Beth Corley spent 20 years in education before becoming a counselor and holds a master's degree in Neuroscience and Trauma. She is EMDR trained and trauma-informed, and she works with children and adults who have been through adversity, using what she knows about the brain alongside practical strategies.

If you have a younger child who is struggling, call us and we can talk about whether Beth may be a good fit.

Questions people ask

Can I come to my teen's sessions?

Sometimes, yes. Sessions can be individual or family, and parents can join when it helps. Teens also need time on their own with their therapist, so we work out the balance with you and your teen.

What if my teen doesn't want to go?

That is common. The first session is partly about seeing whether your teen feels comfortable, and they get to ask questions too. A free phone consultation can help you decide how to bring it up.

Can teens do therapy online?

Yes. We offer secure video sessions for people who live in Wyoming. Some teens find it easier to open up from home, while others prefer coming into the office.

Does insurance cover therapy for teens?

We are in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield and work with Cigna, Optumhealth Behavioral Solutions, Meritain, Allied Benefit Systems, Mountain Health CO-OP, United Health Care, Medicaid and others. If your plan is not listed, call us; we can often bill out of network.
